Chemoprophylaxis in surgery.
The literature on the prophylactic use in surgery of disinfectants, antibiotics and the chemotherapeutic agents is reviewed. It is concluded that there is little place for the routine use of antibiotics or chemotherapeutic agents except in a very few conditions. Disinfectants do have a part to play in skin sterilization and in the reduction of postoperative wound infection. However, none of the...
متن کاملPostoperative atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery: who should receive chemoprophylaxis?
To evaluate arrhythmogenic risk factors associated with greater incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) in patients undergoing cardiac surgery (CABG and/or valvular surgery) in order to identify those more prone to the development of this arrhythmia for possible chemoprophylaxis. Sixty-six patients who underwent elective cardiac surgery were assessed. The following risk factors fo...
متن کاملChemoprophylaxis in gastrointestinal tumors.
Chemoprevention of gastrointestinal tumors uses natural or synthetic agents to arrest, retard or reverse the carcinogenesis process. The prospect of prevention is clearly appealing, especially for colorectal cancer (CRC), that represents the second most common cause of cancer-related death in the Western world. Aspirin is the best studied chemopreventive agent for CRC, with randomized trials de...
متن کاملLeprosy chemoprophylaxis in Micronesia.
A programme of chemoprophylaxis was introduced as a component of the leprosy control programme in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), beginning in 1996. The entire population of the country was to be screened, and a single dose of 600 mg rifampicin, 400 mg ofloxacin and 100 mg minocycline (ROM) was to be administered to the entire population. Two rounds of screening the entire population ...
متن کاملChemoprophylaxis of scrapie in mice.
Three applications of the polyanion pentosanpolysulphate about 2 months before infection of mice with scrapie completely protected animals infected with up to 100 LD50, and considerably prolonged the lifespan of those infected with 100 to 10,000 LD50. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by immunoblot analysis for the protein of scrapie-associated fibrils.
